State Prosecuting Attorneys File Charges Against Accused in Activist Killing with Capital Homicide
State prosecutors on Tuesday filed charges against Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old alleged of fatally shooting conservative figure Charlie Kirk, with first-degree homicide—and announced they will seek the capital punishment if he is convicted.
Legal Accusations and Case Circumstances
Specific accusations filed include premeditated killing, felony discharge of a firearm, and witness tampering. County Attorney Jeff Gray explained that factors elevating the charge involved the victim’s public statements and the presence of minors during the incident.
“I do not take this decision lightly,” Gray said. “This determination I have made independently on the facts of the case.”
Case Details and Reported Intent
Investigators allege that Robinson instructed his housemate to erase incriminating text messages and not speak to police. Based on reports, Robinson’s mother informed law enforcement that her son had become increasingly ideological and had started leaning to the left, including advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.
Robinson was allegedly in a relationship with his roommate, who was transitioning genders.
Incident of the Killing
The victim was shot at an appearance at Utah Valley University moments following a comment about transgender individuals and gun violence. Footage of the incident showed the attack.
Apprehension and Proof
Robinson was arrested the following day after acquaintances recognized him from suspect photos. He surrendered with the assistance of a associate who was a officer.
Prior to his arrest, Robinson reportedly admitted to the shooting in a message on Discord, writing: “Everyone, it’s unfortunate, I was responsible at UVU yesterday.”
Investigators also reported that DNA matching Robinson was found on a cloth wrapped on the firearm thought to have been used in the shooting. The weapon was abandoned near the university.
Text Messages and Marked Bullets
Additional evidence included a text message from Robinson to his housemate that stated: “There was the chance to eliminate Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to do it.”
Officials additionally discovered cartridges with engraved messages such as internet memes, video game terms, and lyrics from an anti-fascist song. One inscription read: “NoTices Bulge OWO What’s This?”
Legal Proceedings and Detention
Robinson will stay in custody without bail due to the prosecution’s intent to seek the capital sentence. He was set to be presented in before a judge for an first hearing.
Gray described the homicide as “an American tragedy,” stating that Kirk was murdered while exercising First Amendment rights.
