President Authorizes Sending National Guard to Windy City, as Judge Halts Portland Forces Dispatch.
Over the weekend, the White House stated that the Commander-in-Chief has moved to deploy the state guard to Chicago, even as a federal judge prevented his administration from deploying forces to the Oregon city.
White House Confirms Chicago Deployment
An official representative for the executive branch confirmed that the chief executive had authorized using Chicago-area national guard members, referencing what she described as “continuing unrest and lawlessness” that local leaders have not quelled.
In Oregon, US district judge Karin Immergut agreed with the argument from Oregon that Trump dispatching militia members to the city would likely inflame rather than settle public unrest.
“This judgment confirms what residents of Oregon already know: the legal system worked, and the truth has prevailed,” the state's chief executive stated following the restraining order was granted. “There is no insurrection in this municipality. No threat to national security. No fires, no devices, no deaths due to social disturbances.”
State Leader Labels Move Unwarranted
The Democratic top official, the state leader labeled the move unjustified and “an orchestrated display – not a real attempt to ensure citizen security.”
Judge Prevents Oregon City Guard Movement
The President has encountered resistance to his strategy of deploying forces to municipalities with Democratic mayors he describes as lawless, after a US district judge halted his administration’s attempt to deploy the state militia to Portland, Oregon.
Trump had stated on late September that he would dispatch personnel to the municipality, “authorizing Maximum Strength, if needed”, overlooking pleas from city authorities and the the state's federal lawmakers. A group of seventeen city leaders in the area had objected to the forces dispatch.
