Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is developed, featuring a substantial range of amenities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
